Both are built around greater affordability and a shorter turnaround, without compromising the tailoring standards we hold across every garment we make.
Full Canvas
A full canvas custom suit offers much of the craftsmanship and structure found in a bespoke garment, while providing a more accessible path to ownership. Built using the same high-quality canvas construction through the chest, body, and collar, it combines traditional tailoring techniques with carefully selected machine-assisted processes to reduce production time without compromising quality. Essential hand-finishing remains at the heart of the garment, ensuring a refined appearance, excellent drape, and lasting comfort. With a fitting process that includes multiple appointments to achieve the correct balance and silhouette, each suit is tailored to the individual while maintaining the character and standards of a traditionally crafted garment.
Full Canvas Tailoring
A full canvas custom suit shares the same foundational construction as its bespoke counterpart. The same canvas types are used across the body, chest and collar. However, to reduce the labour requirements, certain elements are replaced with machine stitching, which roughly halves the construction time and the number of hand sewn components. The result is a more accessible product, though essential hand finishing is retained throughout to maintain the quality of the final garment.
Key hand finished elements include:
- Hand padded lapel for a natural roll
- Pick stitching along the edges
- Hand finished collar
- Hand finished sleeves
- Essential internal hand tagging
The fitting process mirrors that of a full bespoke commission, with a minimum of two fittings before finalisation. The overall look is built around a natural shoulder with adequate suppression, unless a specific look is requested by the client.
Half Canvas
A half canvas suit serves as the introduction to traditional canvassed tailoring, offering a balance between craftsmanship, performance, and value. By combining a canvassed upper section with a fused lower section, this construction retains the natural lapel roll, collar shape, and refined appearance associated with higher-end tailoring while reducing the time required for production. Although it differs from a full canvas suit in the way it drapes and evolves with wear, it still delivers a structured and elegant silhouette. Half Canvas Tailoring
The half canvas is the entry point into canvassed construction, and a method commonly found across many mid to high range ready to wear brands. For a fully lined jacket, the construction combines canvas and fusing. The upper half of the jacket, including the lapel, carries a canvassed structure while the lower half is fused. This approach further reduces tailoring time while preserving the natural roll and collar character that define a canvassed suit.
Where the half canvas differs from a full canvas is in its drape and the way the jacket moves over time. At Ceylon Bespoke however, the same hand finishing details are applied regardless of construction tier.
